The application period to TAMK’s Media and Arts programme and its study paths Interactive Media, Music Production and Fine Art ended on 25.1.2017. This time, the number of first-choice applicants was 334, which was a really good result in the new application system.

At the moment, our teachers are assessing the applicants' pre-tasks and portfolios. As a result for assessments we will invite about 100 applicants in total to an online interview - no more travelling to exams!. Invitation letters to online interviews will be sent in mid-February 2017. The online interviews will be organized 20.-23.2.2017.

The next application period will be next year, but it's good to start practicing your skills and expanding your portfolio already now in order to be ready for the next year's application. For motivation and more information, please check these student stories about studying in TAMK's Media and programme and it's study paths.

More stories will be published from each study path in future to give you a good insight to our studies. Hopefully these will also give an extra motivation to all who will be invited to online interviews and also for those who may not be invited to interviews this year. Stay tuned to follow latest news and our students’ stories!

Here's a really fun application-themed video, made by Pablo Sanchez Hidalgo and Fernando Otero: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK3whpTRkkw

If you want to see more works done by our students on the same theme, type the search words "TAMK Infographics" into YouTube...

And this is NOT all! Now it's also time to apply for MA Studies in Screenwriting at TAMK!

Both of these study programmes are taught in English, and we have students from five continents, so the studying atmosphere is very international.

What do these AMAZING study programmes cost? Nothing, at least if you're a citizen of the EU. Finland is a nice, quiet country, and the level of education is considered to be one of the best in the world. The TAMK Mediapolis campus is by a lakeside, some 15 minutes by bus from the city center of Tampere. Tampere itself is a vibrant student city, 160 km from the Finland's capital Helsinki, with a lot to do for young people. And almost everybody knows how to speak English.

(Notice how the Finnish weather wasn't mentioned at all... You can look it up if you really want to know and don't know about it already. It can be very nice here in the summer, lots of daylight. Often we don't even get snow during summer.)

Tampere is situated north just two hours apart from the capital city, Helsinki. We have a population of 222,512 people, making us the third largest city in Finland. We are located between two lakes: Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, and we really love our green parks and lake scenery. The whole city is divided into two parts by the Tammerkoski rapids: the eastern and western sides, making it easy to navigate in the city.

Studying in TAMK gives you the advantage of being in a big city with all the comforts of a small one. But don’t take our word for it, we asked some of the students already studying in TAMK why they feel Tampere is the best place to study in. And here are their answers!

1. Why is it so cool to study in Tampere?
2. Why did you choose Tampere?
3. Which places are the ones everyone needs to have seen in Tampere?
4. Any cool bars/clubs/pubs in Tampere you would recommend?

ANDREAS (GER, 11IMP)

1. Tampere is relatively small, therefore everything is pretty easy to be reached, and the majority of the people here speak English.
2. I chose Tampere mostly because it is easy to get to, they have good connections to other countries, and people don’t mind if I don’t know enough Finnish.
3. Pyynikintori, Megazone, Kauppahalli, Rauhaniemi Sauna(especially during winter) and The Pispala Sauna.
4. I am not a big bar goer, but I recommend the OMA tea house not far from the train station, Bar K, Haralds Restaurant, and Space Bowling & Billiards on Hämeenkatu 23.

DYLAN (WALES, 12IMP)

1. You get to meet lots of people from many different countries at an international school.  Collaborating with them gives you a new perspective on ideas and valuable experience as well as making new friends.
2. It was the nicest city I had visited so far in Finland having also seen Helsinki, Jyväskylä and Kuopio. It's pretty, easy to get around and feels like home away from home.
3. Näsinneula, Särkänniemi and Pispala.
4. Jack the Rooster, Aussie bar, O'Connell's and Cafe Europa.

KIMBERLY (USA, 13IMP)

1. My core reason for applying to TAMK is because it was one of two ways that I would be able to move to Finland.  And, from there work towards making the move permanent! It was only by fate that TAMK in 2013 created a program that I was interested in..."the combination of music and media...MAINLY THE MUSIC!" So this year I love learning about music, music business, all the technical things!
2. This is an easy question! I fell in love with Finland as a country and Tampere became my first love when it came to cities. Good culture background, VERY STRONG music scene, not far from other cities (Turku, Helsinki, or Espoo), the majority of my personal friends live in or very near Tampere.
3. This question I really couldn't answer, reason being because much of what I cherish is wrapped around moments spent with my close personal friends. They are the ones that make a place memorable

4. The answer for the previous question for sure fits this question.

Any doubts on why Tampere isn’t the greatest city to study in? We didn’t think so! Apply now!

“When I applied to TAMK, I took the Pre-Task very seriously. I planned it for numerous amount of days and talked with my friends and family on how I should execute it and what their thoughts on the overall product was. Their opinions were more valuable than gold, and even though I got some harsh feedback (“Why are you using green as a colour and not red” or “That font looks stupid”), it gave a whole new perspective to what I was actually doing.
Sometimes you can get stuck to a certain idea, and might think it is great, but remember to ask around! This way you can get new opinions, fresh point of views and a different approach to the whole execution. If something isn’t working, move on and try it differently.
I remember submitting the Pre-Task and feeling that I have sincerely done all I could. I was proud of what I had achieved and knew deep down that I would get an invitation to the entrance exam. If you feel the same way, you’ll get it too!”
-Noora, Interactive Media student since 2011

The Pre-Task is the first step in your application and the most challenging one. Also for us the Pre-Task has been really, really exciting! But there is no need to panic if you don’t have an awesome idea right away!
Some of our students will provide you here with some useful tips and tricks for the Pre-Task.

Remember when you applied for TAMK! How did you get prepared for the application?
“I prepared for the application by relaxing and consuming culture from different sources. Opening your mind in whatever way works best for you is, in my opinion, really the best way to prepare, since the task of applying is going to ask for both effort and creativity.”
– Markku, Interactive Media student since 2012

“I started preparing for the task a lot of time in advance, because I wanted to make the Pre-Task perfect. I got inspired by different webpages, movies, books, comics, whatever, and then brought all that inspiration together for an amazing results (at least in my opinion hehe). They key is to be in the right mindset and staying focused.”
– Noora, Interactive Media student since 2011

Which tips could you give new applicants while they are working on the pre-task?

“I have grasped that interesting ideas are more important that technical skills. Enthusiasm is also a plus, they are looking for people who are interested in learning new and improving their skills.”
- Krista, Interactive Media Student since 2012

“Make sure you've understood the task correctly, then try your best to do a decent job!”
- Lukas, Interactive Media Student since 2011

The pre-tasks mostly also include a portfolio! What would you suggest to applicants to put in the portfolio?

“Create the portfolio from works that you 1. enjoyed making 2. are proud of 3. got good feedback from others”
– Markku, Interactive Media student since 2012
