Helmi omakuva! - exhibition and workshops 4.3.-8.3.2014

Almost every artist creates a serie of self-portraits in some point of their life. My moment came now.
All art pieces in the exhibition are made out of hama beads. I study my various sides and love towards colors and handcrafting. Many pieces are like canvases but the materiality of beads brings also sculptural multidimensionality.
Helmi omakuva! - exhibition is open Tue 4.3.- Sat 8.3.2014 in Ikuinen Galleria (Finlaysoninkuja 3, 33210 Tampere). Artist is having workshops, where you can get to know (or fall in love again) to the world of hama beads, on Friday 7.3. and Saturday 8.3. Material payment 2€ (cash).

WELCOME!

Jack the monster started as a school project for an Animation course. We had three months to work on the stop motion and we have been really happy of people's interest and positive feedback on our project.
Our first step was create a story suitable for our project, that would be effective but not that long. We end up watching a lot of animations of different genres to get inspiration.
After that, we shared ideas and mixed them together, creating a story based on what we both wanted.

The story of our animation is about a girl who meets a weird and cute creature. This creature seems to be special and different from others because after eating something he starts to grow and grow. He eats everything: bench, cars and more. The girl is surprised about his “power” and she gets attached to him, knowing him better and spending time together. But after a night, everything changes cause the creature is a really big monster now and he knows he would be tempted to eat her. The girl decide to looking for him around the city and she finally finds him next to a river, where he seems to be sad. The girl understands the monsters reasons of escaping, but she still wants to stay with him and she decides to be eaten by the monster, to stay with him forever.

The storyboard was the next step. There we plan the techniques we are going to use, the backgrounds we are going to create and what kind of shooting we needed to do.
After getting the material from school, we started spending time cutting and animating at the same time.
The cutting process was really hard but fun. We spent about 1 month building paper trees, buildings, fountain, bridge, rivers, rooms, cars and more. At the same time we drew the animation frame by frame on paper with black markers and cut the figures out, leaving little bit of a white edge to give our animation the style we wanted. Water was one creative solution among others, it’s completely made of plastic wrap we took from kitchen.

Not everything was ready when we started to shoot because it was missing buildings and sections of animation, but the time was running out so we had to start to animating. The place where we animated was a darkroom in the basement of our school, where an annoying ventilation was moving our trees during the shooting. It wasn't the best place to shoot but we were sure no one would have come there.
We used a stop motion software called Dragon frame to help us to control the shooting and to be sure we were moving the characters in the right position. Dragon Frame was super helpful and I think the animation wouldn´t be good without it.

We were only in 2 to shoot the animation so we had to find the fastest way to do it. When one of us was taking the picture and checking everything was in the right position, other one was changing the hand drawn frames and moving the props (like water for example). The work process took at least 9 hours per day, shooting over 800 pictures.

The music of our animation is by amazing Luci Holland. She was the winner of a contest we had when we were looking for talented composers to write music for our animation.

Working for the project grew our interest in Animation and teached us a lot about Dragon Frame and After Effects. Currently we are working on two new projects; a music video with colorful special effects and a new stop motion animation that will challenge us again, just like Jack the monster did. We make a great and enthusiastic team so it’s always thrilling and motivating to work together as we both look for new chances to learn and get experience.

With high spirits and motivation, our team Appier spent many efforts in producing promotional videos for our idea ‘Weggle’. Team mate Inês and David had done such great job with video editing for our pitch material together with Eni presenting in it. During the live voting session, snacks and drinks were accompanied. I remember that feeling, as nervous as if we were watching the American Idol finale! And came the good news announcing our team is proceeding to boot camp, selected as Top 5 ideas when we popped the champagne and celebrate another milestone for our progress in this Sanoma Commerce Accelerator. It was such rewarding feeling and the team shared the joy together with other student teams, facilitator Bee Gee and Tina Garvey in Demola premise. (as featured in Demola News)

Lassi and Joris carefully looking at the voting results during one of the webinar

In the beginning of December, our team of four were flew on an all-paid 5-day trip to Amsterdam, attending boot camp to make a rapid prototype for our idea and compete at the last stage of the project. Selected idea(s) would be developed as Sanoma’s internal venture and we would be employed to work with Sanoma for a year. This is a great exposure for us student team to meet and work with professionals on the project during boot camp. It was such fun and exciting experience being in the hip urban city with loads of cyclists and crowds as we took short ferry ride to the boot camp located in MTV Studio where we worked most of the time.Unlimited supplies of breakfast, lunch and snacks during boot camp / Eni presenting progress at the end of each day

During those 5 days, again we got out of the building and went to De Negen Straatjes to do further customer validation, this time with the friendly Dutch! We had so much fun walking around and talking to people in Amsterdam and at one point we even got lost finding our way to Dutch pancake dinner! The learning experience is rather unique in this project: although ‘Weggle’ could be a game changing innovation for Sanoma but unfortunately the idea did not proceed to make into the latest addition to Sanoma’s internal ventures. Perhaps the market did not assure firm success for Sanoma in the industry for launching ‘Weggle’ as part of them, but we were praised for our effort in this project and were encouraged the possibility to develop ‘Weggle’ with different partners in the near future.

To be able to attend the bootcamp is considered a winning for us student already, getting to meet the brains behind the project, learn and networking with other teams from Sanoma and many others professionals in the industry. Many lovely memories and friends were made, thanks to Sanoma as well as everyone who worked hard to make this experience a fun and pleasurable one. I would also like to thank our student mentor Vesa Lindqvist who helped us during the project and brought us to very delicious Dutch pancakes! It has been a very special Demola project and the facilitators have been doing a great job to support us student teams to progress well in this project. ‘Weggle’ has also been awarded again as Best potential startup of Autumn 2013 at the final pitch event happened in January 2014, thanks to the wonderful pitching from talented team mate Eni Iduozee.

There are some inspiring reading on John Martin’s blogCEO of Sanoma Digital, where he explains the vision behind this innovation accelerator. As an aspired user experience designer, I am blessed to have humbly learnt about building startup, business value proposition, teamwork and communication, leadership and many other skills in this project, besides the network I have been introduced to. I am looking forward to be more involved and inspired digitally and focus on innovative ways of learning and doing, with the aims of making a better now for a better future.

Four months ago, I joined The Sanoma Commerce Accelerator program via Demola. It is a an intrapreneurship program initiated by Sanoma’s Future Media Team (now Sanoma Innovation Lab lead by Director Lassi Kurkijärvi) together with MakerLab in the Netherlands, and Demola Networks of students were given the opportunity to participate together with Sanoma employees for a fun and great innovative challenge.

In this Commerce Accelerator program, Sanoma is looking for product innovations: what types of new services can facilitate commerce? What is the advertising of the future? Sanoma is in search of disruptive and radical concepts within the innovation scopes of E-commerce, Advertising and Ecosystem enhancement.

Demola encouraged students to take part in Commerce Accelerator innovative program via social media channel.

With heart full of curiosity and interest, I joined the project expecting to learn a thing or two, but instead it turned into an intensive and fast-paced learning experience. It even got me on a plane to Amsterdam! The learning focused on lean startup methods with weekly themed webinar. Some of the webinar topics include: Technological and Social Trends, Lean Product Development, Validation and MVP (Minimum Viable Product) and as such.

Note: Webinar comes from Web Seminar

Each week, I would sit in front of my laptop (usually) on Wednesday evening with headphone, snacks and drinks ready for educational yet entertaining webinar conducted by the organisers via online seminar platform. And then comes the weekly assignments on generating ideas, creating problem hypothesis, validating riskiest assumption, developing quick pitch and so on. Participants are interacting via web platform which allows commenting on other participant’s idea, ask questions, vote (invest) for best ideas and submit assignments. Skype call sessions and student mentors are available for students as well to help us developing our ideas.

General feedback would be given on our ideas during webinars and discussion is carried on in the Commerce Accelerator web platform. I particularly enjoyed ‘Design Thinking’ with Ian Collingwood among all webinar sessions.
“Don’t sell what you can build. Build what you can sell.” ~Ian Collingwood

Students were allowed to form into small team and work together as opposed to Sanoma employee participants who work alone on their idea. Our team Appier works closely together on 1 idea after rounds of feedback and voting. My initial idea ‘Flowy’ were discarded as out of scope in the project, but I am excited to work on team mate, Eni’s idea ‘Weggle’ and help expand and improvise it. From Value Proposition, WWW (Who What Why) to marketing plan, our team followed closely with the lean startup methods. I would say customer validation is the most exciting part of the project. We got out of the building, went to shopping mall to do interviews and gather feedback on our idea ‘Weggle’. To my surprise, Finns are not that shy after all as they happily talked during those interviews!

“Weggle is a mobile-app that gives user another chance to buy a product, which is temporarily unavailable in size, color or model. Weggle helps fashion shoppers who find a product that they really want and don’t want to miss out on it. Our user needs to press a button on the online-shop/or scan barcode in physical store, that will save their product on Weggle, then wait for the app to send immediate mobile-alert once product becomes available for purchase. This app will save the user time and nerves by helping them to keep up with the product effortlessly 24/7.”

Weggle, an app-based service to help customers and businesses with out of stock problem.

There were total 8 webinar sessions and during week 7, ‘Weggle’ has been voted into Top 20 ideas before making it to the Top 10 among few hundred ideas submitted from both student teams and Sanoma employees. In the same time, our team presented ‘Weggle’ at Demola mid pitch event for autumn 2013. ‘Weggle’ pitch won as the best potential idea and our team Appier got to meet up with Paavo Bäckman for advice and consultation. This was a great confidence boost for our team! But it also meant that more hard work and efforts to be put into presenting Pro-MVP for the live voting session which the Bootcamp Top 5 were selected.
